Israel Warns Hamas: Stop Kite Attacks or Face Escalation

The Israeli government has issued a stern warning to Hamas in Gaza, threatening to intensify “targeted strikes” if the launching of kites towards Israel continues. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, along with Defence Minister Israel Katz, conducted a security evaluation discussing the threat posed by drones, balloons, and kites launched from Gaza towards Israel. The meeting was attended by Lt.-Gen. Eyal Zamir, the head of the National Security Council, and senior Israel Defense Forces (IDF) officials.

Netanyahu emphasized that if the kite launches persist, Israel will escalate targeted strikes against those responsible and clear out areas used as launch sites for kites, drones, and balloons. He stated that the safety and security of Israeli communities will not be compromised by Hamas or any other entity in Gaza.

Despite the tensions, for 13-year-old Omar Halawa from Khan Younis, flying kites near the shore is a way to find solace amid the conflict between Israel and Hamas. Omar expressed that flying kites is a source of joy for children in Gaza, emphasizing their innocence and desire for peace.

Prior to the October 7, 2023, attack by Hamas, Israel reported incidents of incendiary kites and balloons from Gaza causing fires and damage. Recent Israeli strikes resulted in casualties, including two children, amid escalating tensions. Hamas condemned Israel’s actions, accusing them of aggression and disregarding international law.

Omar, expressing fear of potential strikes, shared his concerns about the security situation and its impact on children’s activities. His mother, Yasmin Halawa, highlighted the challenges her son faces and the importance of simple joys like flying kites in a conflict-ridden environment.

As the day drew to a close, children in Gaza continued flying kites, adapting to the changing circumstances while seeking moments of normalcy amidst the ongoing turmoil.
