A man committed a heinous act by beheading his wife and parading her severed head, but received forgiveness from the victim’s parents, leading to a reduced prison sentence. The tragic incident took place in Ahvaz, Iran, where 17-year-old Mona Heydari was brutally murdered by her husband, Sajjad Heydari, and his brother, Heydar. Despite chilling video evidence of the husband showcasing the victim’s head, he was given a lenient punishment.
Mona, who was forced into marriage at the age of 12, had fled her abusive husband and sought refuge in Turkey with another man. Her father located her and persuaded her to return to Iran, where Heydari refused to grant her a divorce, ultimately leading to her tragic death. The husband, who was also Mona’s cousin, justified the murder by claiming she had dishonored him. Surprisingly, her parents chose not to seek retribution under Iran’s Islamic law.
The court sentenced Heydari to seven-and-a-half years for murder and an additional eight months for intentional assault. Heydari’s brother, who helped dispose of the body, received a 45-month prison term for complicity in intentional homicide. Disturbingly, Mona’s father defended the early marriage, stating that the violence in the relationship was normal, and praised the husband as a good provider.
The Women’s Committee of the National Council of Resistance of Iran revealed that Mona was coerced into marrying her cousin at 12 and endured domestic abuse. Whenever she expressed a desire to divorce, her family pressured her to return for the sake of their child, born when she was only 14. The incident sparked outrage, with reports of the husband parading his wife’s head while the brother disposed of the body.
The Women’s Committee criticized the prevalence of honor killings in Iran, attributing it to the regime’s failure to criminalize such acts. Statistics show a significant number of honor killings in various regions, including Khuzestan, Kurdistan, Ilam, and Sistan and Baluchestan. The lack of legal repercussions for such atrocities has led to a rise in these horrific crimes, with hundreds of cases reported annually across the country.
This tragic event sheds light on the urgent need for stricter laws and enforcement to protect vulnerable individuals from honor-based violence and ensure justice for victims of such barbaric acts.
