England may have to endure an extended period without the services of Mark Wood, who is grappling with an injury setback. Despite staging a remarkable comeback in the Ashes, Joe Root’s stellar unbeaten century propelled the visitors to a commanding position at The Gabba on the opening day of the second Test match.
Root displayed his dominance by scoring an unbeaten 135 runs, registering his 40th Test century while guiding England to a total of 325-9, supported by contributions from Zak Crawley (76) and Jofra Archer (32no). Although Australia had their moments, the day ultimately belonged to Ben Stokes’ squad.
However, concerns arose off the field regarding Wood’s availability. The fast bowler, dealing with a knee injury, initially ruled out for the second Test, now faces uncertainty for the forthcoming encounter in Adelaide after providing an update on his condition.
Wood, aged 35, who featured in the first Test in Perth but remained wicketless after bowling 11 overs, cast doubt on his return before Christmas. Speaking to Aussie broadcaster Channel 7 in Brisbane, Wood indicated that a comeback in Adelaide seemed challenging, hinting at a more realistic target in Melbourne or Sydney.
The seasoned player has encountered multiple injury setbacks throughout his career, with his recent appearance in Perth marking his return to Test cricket after a 15-month absence due to an elbow issue. Wood, still wearing a knee brace on the opening day in Brisbane, watched the action from the dressing room, prompting Stokes to include spin-bowling allrounder Will Jacks in the lineup as his replacement.
Former England captain Michael Atherton, analyzing Wood’s setback, expressed concerns about the impact of his absence on the team’s pace strategy and Ashes campaign. While Wood’s absence forced a tactical adjustment with the inclusion of a spin option in Brisbane, Mitchell Starc stood out for Australia, claiming 6-71 from 19 overs with the pink ball.
