“Iconic UK Shoe Retailer to Close Worcester Branch”

One of the UK’s long-standing shoe retailers is set to close its high street branch in Worcester after serving customers for 153 years. Robin Elt Shoes, established in 1872, will permanently shut down on January 10, 2026. However, the company’s other branches in Hereford, Ludlow, Malvern, Leominster, and Totnes will continue operations as usual.

Jenny Elt, the managing director, expressed deep sadness over the closure of the family-owned business due to the location’s lack of financial viability. Elt mentioned that despite the emotional difficulty in reaching this decision, the store’s future sustainability was not feasible, stating, “We can’t generate revenue out of thin air.”

In response to the closure, a spokesperson from Worcester City Council acknowledged the challenges faced by city centers with the increasing popularity of online shopping and a shift towards leisure and entertainment-oriented town centers. The council, in collaboration with Worcestershire County Council, Worcester BID, and other stakeholders, has been actively supporting city center traders.

The spokesperson highlighted Worcester’s unique shopping environment that combines well-known high street brands with independent retailers. The city has received substantial funding, including £4.5 million for public realm enhancements, particularly in the Shambles area, to enhance its attractiveness and accessibility.

In related news, charity shop chain Scope has closed three additional high street branches in Morden, Torquay, and Washington, as part of a plan to shut down 77 shops this year. Scope initiated the closures following a forecasted £1.5 million loss earlier in the year, affecting around 200 retail staff and approximately 2,000 volunteers.

Debbie Boylen, Scope’s head of retail, expressed regret over the closure of the shops in Morden, Torquay, and Washington, emphasizing the critical role these shops played in supporting the charity’s work with disabled individuals and their families.
