Nicky Henderson remains calm ahead of the upcoming showdown between Constitution Hill and rising star The New Lion this Saturday. Constitution Hill, a previous standout in jumping races, had an unbeaten streak in ten starts before encountering setbacks last season.
After falling as the favorite in the Champion Hurdle and at Aintree, Constitution Hill faced another defeat at Punchestown. Henderson took proactive measures this season by sending Constitution Hill for a thorough check-up equivalent to a visit to Specsavers.
Currently, Constitution Hill is the third favorite at 5-1 for the next year’s Champion Hurdle, with strong contenders like Willie Mullins’ mare Lossiemouth and The New Lion. The BetMGM Fighting Fifth Hurdle at Newcastle will see Constitution Hill pitted against The New Lion, who secured victory at the Cheltenham Festival.
The upcoming race also features entries from Willie Mullins’ Anzadam and the reigning Champion Hurdle winner Golden Ace. Coral’s odds stand at 11-8 for both Constitution Hill and The New Lion, with Anzadam at 3-1, Golden Ace at 20-1, and Nemean Lion at 33-1.
Henderson expressed confidence in Constitution Hill’s preparation, emphasizing the lack of pressure leading up to the event. He mentioned positive training sessions and the readiness of jockey Nico de Boinville. Henderson’s team is gearing up for the challenge with a final training session before the race.
In a strategic move, Nemean Lion was added as a late entry, expanding the competition. Henderson, while focusing on other races at Newbury, delegated the race responsibilities to owner Michael Buckley.
