French public prosecutor expresses frustration over premature revelation of arrests made in connection with the Louvre jewelry heist. The prosecutor highlighted the negative impact of the disclosure on the ongoing investigation, emphasizing the setback it poses to the efforts of the numerous investigators involved in the case.
While confirming the arrests on Saturday night, the prosecutor did not disclose the exact number of individuals apprehended. However, she mentioned that one suspect was detained at Paris Charles de Gaulle Airport while attempting to flee the country. Reports indicate that a second suspect was also apprehended in the Paris region on the same evening.
Both suspects, reportedly from Seine-Saint-Denis, were swiftly apprehended by law enforcement following surveillance operations. One of the suspects was intercepted just as he was preparing to leave the country, with reports suggesting a planned flight to Algeria.
The suspects are currently in pre-trial detention facing charges related to organized theft and criminal conspiracy. The prosecutor stated that further details would be provided after the conclusion of the initial 96-hour detention period.
Interior Minister Laurent Nunez commended the investigative efforts and called for continued discretion to maintain the integrity of the inquiry. The suspects are believed to be part of the criminal group responsible for the daring heist at the renowned museum, where valuable jewels, including royal pieces, were stolen, with some items subsequently recovered damaged.
