The Department of Health and Social Care is reaching out to individuals interested in conditions like Down Syndrome to provide feedback on new draft statutory guidance, following the enactment of the Down Syndrome Act in 2022.

This guidance aims to assist health, social care, education, and housing services in better meeting the needs of individuals with Down syndrome. It seeks to clarify the support and services available to them while also increasing awareness of the condition.

Dr. Zubir Ahmed, a Member of Parliament, announced the launch of the consultation, emphasizing the challenges faced by the estimated 47,000 individuals in the UK with Down syndrome in accessing appropriate services and support. The consultation, open for 12 weeks, invites feedback from anyone interested in shaping the guidance.

Interested parties can participate in the consultation through an online survey available until January 28, 2026. Dr. Ahmed highlighted the government’s commitment to supporting individuals with Down syndrome in making informed decisions about their future and ensuring fair access to services.

The guidance under the Down Syndrome Act 2022 aims to benefit not only individuals with Down syndrome but also those with similar needs due to other chromosomal or genetic conditions or learning disabilities. Dr. Ahmed expressed gratitude to individuals with lived experience, families, carers, and partner organizations for their contributions to developing the draft guidance.

The consultation process seeks to gather responses to create impactful guidance that will positively influence the lives of individuals with Down syndrome and related conditions.
