The close friend of a British individual who passed away following consumption of illicit alcohol in a foreign country has shared the story of how she gradually fell ill after ingesting shots, emphasizing the need for increased measures to prevent methanol poisoning.

The Foreign Office has recently expanded its list of countries at risk for methanol poisoning due to the dangers posed by counterfeit or contaminated alcoholic beverages. This updated list now includes Ecuador, Japan, Kenya, Mexico, Nigeria, Peru, Russia, and Uganda following reported incidents. Methanol poisoning occurs when methanol is added to drinks like cocktails and spirits to increase volume and reduce expenses.

Symptoms of methanol poisoning encompass nausea, vomiting, dizziness, confusion, and more specific indicators such as vision problems that may manifest between 12 to 48 hours post-consumption.

Bethany Clarke, residing in Orpington, London, embarked on a backpacking journey through Southeast Asia with her companion Simone White. Both individuals unknowingly imbibed methanol-contaminated shots, resulting in illness. Tragically, Simone succumbed to methanol poisoning.

Reacting to the inclusion of more nations on the risk list, Bethany expressed her distress but stressed the necessity for further action. She stated, “Expanding the list to more countries is a positive step in raising awareness. However, more concerted efforts are imperative. Without radical actions from the British government, further fatalities are probable.”

Bethany, now residing in Brisbane, Australia, remarked, “It’s crucial for people to be vigilant – opt for canned beverages or sealed bottles that you have personally opened.” Bethany and Simone commenced their trip in Cambodia before proceeding to Laos, engaging in activities like river tubing and consuming methanol-laced shots.

Despite feeling unwell the next day, they continued with their plans, only realizing the severity of their condition later. Bethany recounted, “We felt unlike any prior hangover – something was amiss.” Their deteriorating health eventually led them to a hospital, where the diagnosis of methanol poisoning was delayed, ultimately resulting in Simone’s tragic demise.

Reflecting on the ordeal, Bethany emphasized the importance of awareness and governmental action to combat methanol poisoning. She underscored the necessity for enhanced education and preventive measures to avert further tragedies.
