A specialist in hair care has emphasized the importance of regularly cleaning your hairbrush, likening it to any other essential step in your hair care routine. Discovering the right products and techniques tailored to your hair can elevate your confidence and sense of well-being. However, neglecting to clean your hairbrush for extended periods can hinder your progress.
Clodagh Egan, a certified trichologist known as @clodaghhaircare on TikTok, highlighted the significance of maintaining clean hair brushes to prevent hair loss. She explained that unclean brushes can harbor bacteria from dead skin cells and dirt, leading to hair follicle irritation and potential hair loss over time.
According to the NHS, various factors can contribute to hair loss, with losing 50 to 100 hairs daily being normal. While most hair loss is not a cause for concern, it can sometimes signal an underlying medical issue or genetic predisposition, such as male and female pattern baldness.
Clodagh cautioned against the risks associated with using a dirty brush, even though severe consequences are rare. She noted that dirty brushes can exacerbate greasy hair by transferring oils back and forth between the brush and hair strands.
To maintain clean brushes, Clodagh recommended washing them approximately once a month, suggesting more frequent washing for individuals with fewer brushes. Her cleaning method involves soaking the brushes in a mixture of water and detoxing shampoo overnight, followed by air-drying them the next day.
In addition to using a detoxing shampoo, Clodagh advised incorporating baking soda into the cleaning solution for its cleansing properties. Baking soda’s high pH value and slight abrasiveness make it effective in removing dirt and grease from surfaces, including hairbrushes.
To enhance the cleaning process, Clodagh suggested adding regular shampoo to the mixture. This comprehensive approach ensures thorough cleaning of the hairbrush to maintain optimal hair health and hygiene.
