As the cold and flu season approaches, many people are seeking remedies to alleviate their symptoms. However, relying on cough syrups may not be the most effective solution, as cautioned by a doctor.
Doctor Sami, a prominent figure in providing health advice on TikTok, recently advised against using common cough remedies. According to expert opinions, there are more beneficial alternatives to manage cough symptoms.
Amid various suggestions for winter wellness, a doctor suggested that a simple daily pill could enhance recovery. Doctor Sami emphasized that cough syrups, mainly containing sugar, water, and sedatives, do not effectively address airway inflammation or irritation associated with coughs.
Contrary to cough syrups, honey has shown promising results in reducing cough symptoms, particularly nighttime coughs. The soothing properties of honey, with its natural anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial effects, make it a preferable remedy.
Additionally, menthol, warm fluids, and steam were highlighted as effective in alleviating symptoms. The warmth helps soothe the throat and thin out mucus, making coughing more manageable.
Experts caution against over-the-counter cough syrups, as they may not be more effective than a placebo, especially for children under six. Instead, simpler remedies like honey and lemon are recommended for their safety and potential effectiveness in soothing the throat and reducing cough severity.
The NHS advises that most coughs will resolve on their own within a few weeks and recommends rest, hydration, and self-isolation if experiencing a high temperature or feeling unwell.
For treating a cough, pain relief medications like paracetamol or ibuprofen can be used along with honey and lemon, excluding infants under one year old. While these methods may not provide rapid relief, consulting a GP is advised if concerned about persistent cough symptoms.
