A heartless woman has been sentenced to serve time in prison for allowing her vulnerable, disabled mother to pass away in squalid conditions. Colleen Sayegh, aged 38, admitted to neglecting the care of her dependent mother and received a sentence ranging from 15 months to eight years behind bars.
Authorities discovered Sayegh’s mother in a dire state at a residence in Pennsylvania on July 19, 2022. The woman, who was wheelchair-bound and had suffered a stroke in February 2021, was found with severe open wounds, dehydration, and extremely low blood pressure. Tragically, she succumbed to her condition two days later.
Upon investigating the home, police described the living conditions as deplorable, with animal waste covering the floors and emitting a putrid odor. Sayegh confessed to not bathing her mother for months, neglecting to seek medical attention for over a year, and attempting to address her mother’s sores despite causing her immense pain.
An autopsy revealed that the victim died from sepsis resulting from a skin infection likely caused by the unsanitary environment she was exposed to. The medical examiner noted that had Sayegh properly bathed her mother, the chances of her survival would have been significantly higher.
During her sentencing, Sayegh claimed her mother had refused treatment, but the judge criticized her actions as selfish and neglectful. Despite receiving a sentence of 15 months to eight years, some individuals expressed outrage that the punishment was not more severe.
Readers voiced their discontent with the sentence, with one stating that Sayegh should have received a longer prison term. Another commenter remarked on Sayegh’s lack of remorse, highlighting the severity of her actions.
