Canada showed support for winger Tom Wilson after he engaged in a physical altercation to defend a teammate during their dominant victory over France in the Winter Olympics. The 10-2 win had already captivated the audience when Wilson took exception to an opposing player.

While fighting is common in ice hockey, it is typically discouraged in the Winter Olympics. Nevertheless, with Canada securing the win, veteran player Wilson opted to confront France’s Pierre Crinon.

The incident unfolded after Crinon aggressively collided with Nathan MacKinnon in the third period, striking him in the face with his forearm. Despite Crinon receiving a penalty and Canada capitalizing on the ensuing powerplay, Wilson felt compelled to take matters into his own hands.

At 31 years old, Wilson discarded his gloves and challenged Crinon, fully aware that he would be ejected from the game. The International Ice Hockey Federation considers fighting as misconduct, resulting in both Wilson and Crinon being expelled for the final seven minutes of the match.

For Canada, the sacrifice was deemed worthwhile as they had already secured the victory and were advancing to the elimination stage of the men’s ice hockey event in Italy. Wilson’s actions were well-received in the Canada team’s locker room.
