Britons with specific Covid-19 symptoms are being advised to promptly contact their GP or call 111 for urgent assistance as the XFG variant remains predominant in the UK’s Covid case count.
Recent data from the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) indicates a surge in both flu and Covid-19 cases since late September, coinciding with the cooler weather nationwide. The UKHSA reported an increase in Covid-19 positivity from 7.6% to 8.4% on a weekly basis, along with a rise in hospital admissions due to the virus from 2 per 100,000 to 2.73 per 100,000.
Given the heightened risk of infection, the public is strongly encouraged to seek vaccination against the virus whenever possible. Vaccines play a crucial role in enhancing the body’s immune defenses against Covid-19 and other viruses, reducing the likelihood of severe complications upon infection.
Dr. Jamie Lopez Bernal, a Consultant Epidemiologist at UKHSA, emphasized the importance of getting vaccinated before the winter months, stating, “Vaccination provides the best defense against flu, COVID-19, and RSV, underscoring the necessity for eligible individuals to receive the vaccine.”
For those experiencing symptoms of flu or Covid-19, such as fever, cough, fatigue, and body aches, it is advised to limit contact with others, particularly vulnerable individuals. Wearing face coverings, frequent hand washing, and proper disposal of tissues in bins can help mitigate the spread of respiratory illnesses.
In the event of a Covid-19 infection, individuals may encounter various symptoms. While most symptoms tend to improve within a few weeks, the NHS advises seeking urgent medical attention or contacting NHS 111 if certain symptoms persist or worsen.
