BBC Urges Morning Live Hosts: Clarify Relationship Status

Top executives at the BBC are reportedly urging the well-liked pair of Helen Skelton and Gethin Jones to be transparent about the true nature of their relationship, citing viewer interest.

Over 1.5 million viewers regularly watch Morning Live on BBC One, where Helen and Gethin engage in discussions on current topics. While it was believed that the two had started a romantic relationship while working together on the show, rumors of a breakup circulated a few months back.

However, at a recent event in London, Gethin, 47, was seen with his arm around Helen, 42, on the red carpet of the Daily Mirror Pride of Britain ceremony. This display of affection fueled further speculation about their relationship status, prompting concerns among some BBC management.

A BBC executive expressed to the Daily Mail that there is a growing sentiment within the organization that it is time for Helen and Gethin to clarify their relationship status and avoid misleading viewers. The executive emphasized the need for transparency and an end to the ongoing speculation.

Gethin was part of the original hosting team of Morning Live when it premiered five years ago, with Helen joining in 2023. Helen took on the role about a year after separating from Richie Myler, a retired rugby league player with whom she shares three children.

Rumors about Gethin and Helen’s friendship evolving into a romantic involvement began in May this year after they were seen leaving the BAFTAs together. Despite several off-set sightings and recent appearances together, neither has confirmed nor denied the status of their relationship, leading to continued gossip.

It is speculated that the BBC brought in Helen, a former Blue Peter host, to join Gethin on Morning Live in hopes of building a strong on-screen rapport to enhance the show’s success in its time slot.

The BBC is said to have aimed for a similar dynamic to the success of Richard Madeley and Judy Finnigan on ITV’s This Morning in 1998, which drew viewers due to their strong chemistry. The BBC sought to replicate this success in daytime television in 2023.

Speculation persists about whether the on-screen chemistry between Helen and Gethin has translated into an off-screen relationship.
