“Astronaut’s Ex Guilty of False Space Crime Accusation”

A former Air Force intelligence officer has confessed to making a false accusation that her estranged NASA astronaut wife unlawfully accessed her bank account while in space. This claim led to a significant investigation and briefly raised the possibility of the world’s first crime committed in orbit. Summer Worden, aged 50, has pleaded guilty to two counts of providing false information to federal agents after alleging that her ex-wife, NASA astronaut and Iraq War veteran Anne McClain, committed identity theft while on the International Space Station.

According to prosecutors, the widely circulated accusation was entirely untrue. Worden now faces potential imprisonment of up to five years and a fine of £190,000. The US Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of Texas stated that Worden informed investigators that McClain had guessed her password and accessed her bank account from the ISS in January 2019.

The sensational claim triggered investigations by both the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) and NASA’s Office of Inspector General. However, it was revealed that Worden had granted McClain access to the account in 2015 due to their shared financial responsibilities. Investigators also discovered discrepancies in Worden’s statements regarding the account’s opening date and password changes, undermining her allegations.

An indictment unveiled in April 2020 charged Worden with making false statements to the FTC and NASA’s oversight body. Worden claimed she provided incorrect dates to investigators by mistake, later correcting them, and insisted that she did not misrepresent any facts.

Prosecutors argued that Worden intentionally misled authorities, and the evidence contradicted her story. The couple had jointly used the account for family expenses during their marriage. McClain revealed to investigators that she regularly accessed the account while they were together and after their separation, with Worden’s knowledge.

McClain stated that she was unaware her access had been revoked. Worden established her personal account in 2018 as their marriage deteriorated, later accusing McClain of unauthorized access in January 2019. However, investigations concluded that Worden’s accusation was false, and she deliberately misled federal officials.

Their legal dispute was further complicated by a custody battle over Worden’s six-year-old son, born via surrogacy before their relationship. Worden did not allow McClain to adopt the child, leading McClain to seek shared parenting rights in 2018, citing Worden’s alleged explosive temper and financial decisions.

McClain defended accessing the bank account to ensure the child’s well-being amid escalating tensions. Worden argued that McClain should have refrained from checking the account during their divorce and custody disagreement.

McClain, who served as commander of NASA’s Crew-10 mission from March to August, was ultimately cleared of any wrongdoing. Worden, currently out on bond, is scheduled for sentencing on February 12 next year.

Once viewed as a potential milestone in extraterrestrial criminal law, the case now serves as a stark illustration of how a domestic conflict evolved into an international spectacle.
