“Brutal Skate Park Assault Leaves Teen with Severe Injuries”

A cautionary note: This account includes information about physical harm to a minor, along with a photograph of his wounds. A family in Greater Sudbury, located in northern Ontario, is grappling with the aftermath of a brutal assault on a 14-year-old boy at a skate park, leading to charges against two individuals.

Stephanie Labrosse revealed that her son, Kaleb O’Neil, is currently recuperating from significant injuries, including a severe concussion, a fractured cheekbone, three stitches on his upper lip, a broken arm bone, and a nose injury necessitating surgery. Labrosse mentioned that Kaleb will need ongoing medical attention and rehabilitation, and the consequences of the incident have transcended his physical recuperation for the family.

With parental consent, CBC News was permitted to disclose the boy’s name under the Youth Criminal Justice Act (YCJA). Labrosse emphasized the importance of sharing their story with the public, highlighting Kaleb’s struggles with feeling safe in public spaces and his decision to refrain from returning to in-person schooling this autumn.

Labrosse described her son as already grappling with emotional turmoil due to past traumas, including the loss of his father at a young age and the passing of his grandmother not long ago.

On the evening of July 31, Labrosse narrated how Kaleb informed her he was going for a bike ride, only to receive a distressing call shortly afterward where he disclosed being assaulted. Upon reaching him, she encountered a distressing scene with Kaleb bearing injuries, prompting an immediate hospital visit via ambulance.

Two individuals, 18-year-old Skyler Caron and an unnamed 14-year-old, were apprehended by Greater Sudbury police on August 11 and charged with offenses such as aggravated assault and making threats to cause harm. As per the YCJA, the identity of the 14-year-old cannot be disclosed. Both accused individuals have not entered pleas, according to confirmation from the Sudbury Courthouse.

Following the attack, Labrosse noted a shift in Kaleb’s demeanor, with him exhibiting hesitance to venture out alone and opting for online schooling due to discomfort with potential encounters with individuals from the skate park incident.

The family, supported by Sudbury and Area Victim Services, intends to seek counseling to aid in their recovery process. Labrosse highlighted the impact of the assault on household members, including Kaleb’s grandfather, who has sought counseling to cope with the trauma.

Despite the challenges, the family finds solace in the support received from various sources, fostering a sense of unity and resilience. Labrosse acknowledged the fear and distrust stemming from the incident but also emphasized the kindness and solidarity demonstrated by those who have reached out.

As Kaleb’s family focuses on daily recovery and emotional healing, the journey towards physical and psychological restoration continues within their household.
