Serena and Venus Williams have joined forces once again for the U.S. Open tournament. The renowned sisters secured a wild card entry on Wednesday to compete in the doubles event, a title they have clinched twice in the past.
Serena recently made a comeback to tennis following a four-year hiatus, with plans to team up with Venus at Wimbledon thwarted due to Serena’s knee injury during a singles match, leading to their early exit at the Cincinnati Open.
Having previously claimed the U.S. Open doubles title in 1999 and 2009, the Williams sisters boast a commendable record of 27 wins and 7 losses in their nine appearances. Their most recent outing in 2022 saw them exit in the initial round, marking what was anticipated to be Serena’s farewell match at Flushing Meadows.
While Serena, aged 44, paired with Carlos Alcaraz in mixed doubles, achieving one win before exiting in the quarterfinals, Venus, aged 46, is gearing up for the women’s singles event.
The illustrious duo has an impressive tally of 14 Grand Slam doubles titles and three Olympic gold medals in 2000, 2008, and 2012. They also held the top spot in the women’s doubles rankings for eight weeks.
Although Serena opted out of the singles competition at the U.S. Open, where she has triumphed in six out of her 23 Grand Slam singles triumphs, she decided to participate in both doubles events, feeling fit and ready.
Their first U.S. Open doubles victory coincided with Serena’s inaugural singles win at the tournament, with their dominance as a pair peaking about ten years later. Their successful run included triumphs at the Australian Open and Wimbledon in 2009, followed by another U.S. Open win in the same year. Subsequent victories in Australia in 2010 and the French Open solidified their position as holders of all four major trophies at that time.
The commencement of the women’s doubles tournament at the U.S. Open is scheduled for September 3rd.
