“WaPo to Rehire Columnist Attiah After Landmark Ruling”

The Washington Post has been instructed to rehire Karen Attiah, the opinion columnist who was terminated last year for criticizing Charlie Kirk following his tragic death. The decision, revealed by Attiah’s legal team on Monday, includes compensation for back pay and benefits dating back to her firing in September 2025.

According to a statement from Democracy Defenders Fund, the ruling is a significant victory for press freedom, asserting that media organizations cannot use punitive measures to silence journalists addressing uncomfortable truths. Arbitrator Sarah Miller Espinosa, after a hearing on June 4, found that the Post failed to prove Attiah’s alleged gross misconduct, concluding that the termination lacked sufficient cause.

A Post spokesperson acknowledged the arbitration process, but it remains unclear when Attiah will resume her duties. Attiah expressed relief at the decision, emphasizing that her actions as an opinion journalist were not misconduct.

The controversy stemmed from Attiah’s online remarks following Kirk’s death. The Post cited policy violations related to her comments, including a post refusing to mourn Kirk and criticizing societal expectations for absolving individuals like him who promoted violence.

Attiah defended her statements as commentary on gun violence in the U.S. and the glorification of a contentious figure like Kirk. Kirk’s controversial views, including comments disparaging people of color and controversial statements about civil rights icons, added to the debate surrounding the incident.

The Washington Post Guild, representing unionized employees, commended the outcome, noting the absence of a progressive discipline process for Attiah, the sole full-time Black opinion columnist at the Post.

Following Kirk’s death, social media scrutiny intensified, leading to repercussions for individuals deemed insensitive in their remarks about him. This wave of actions resulted in suspensions and firings in various sectors, with some affected individuals successfully challenging their dismissals on the grounds of free speech violations.
