A man from Toronto has been sentenced to 22 years in prison for the murder of two young women at a house party in Fort Erie, Ont. The sentencing, overseen by Superior Court Justice James Ramsay in Welland, highlighted the perpetrator’s history of violence and firearms-related offenses, as well as the profound impact of the killings on the victims’ families.

The victims, Christine Crooks, 18, from Toronto, and Juliana Pannunzio, 20, from Windsor, were fatally shot during a birthday celebration at a rental property in Fort Erie on January 19, 2021. The convicted individual, known as El Plaga in the rap scene, was found guilty by a jury earlier this year.

During the sentencing hearing, family members of the victims shared emotional victim impact statements, expressing their devastation over the loss of their loved ones. Justice Ramsay noted the disturbing circumstances of the murders, including the execution-style killing of one of the women. The court also heard that several party attendees had lied to protect the defendant, hindering the police investigation.

The tragic events unfolded after an argument between the perpetrator and Crooks, his girlfriend, escalated into violence. Following an initial shooting incident, the defendant proceeded to shoot Crooks multiple times before turning his weapon on Pannunzio, who was ultimately killed in a calculated manner. The judge described the actions as displaying a callous disregard for human life.

The defendant’s upbringing in a disadvantaged area with a history of gang activity was noted during the sentencing. It was revealed that the defendant had a lengthy criminal record involving violent crimes and firearms offenses dating back to his teenage years.

While second-degree murder in Canada carries an automatic life sentence, the parole eligibility duration is determined by the presiding judge. In this case, the prosecution advocated for a 25-year parole ineligibility period, emphasizing the need to address gun violence imported from urban centers. Despite being given the chance to speak at the hearing, the defendant chose not to address the court.
