University of Waterloo doctoral student Kaveeshan Thurairajah, although not a recipient of the Nobel Prize, was honored with an Ig Nobel Prize. The Ig Nobels, a whimsical parody of the Nobel Prizes, recognize the most unconventional and imaginative research in academia. Thurairajah and his team were awarded the Ig Nobel Physics Prize this year for their work on creating a urinal that prevents splashing.
Upon receiving the news from his supervisor, fluid physicist Zhao Pan, Thurairajah expressed his delight at the recognition. The team developed various urinal prototypes, such as the Nautilus and Cornocopia designs, to achieve a splash-free and easy-to-clean solution. Thurairajah highlighted the Nautilus design as the optimal choice.
Attending the awards ceremony in Zurich, Thurairajah and his colleagues donned bright yellow raincoats, prepared for accolades from their fellow eccentric scientists. Despite the whimsical nature of their research, Thurairajah emphasized the practical importance of enhancing public facilities like bathrooms to create more inviting spaces.
In addition to Thurairajah’s team, Canadian researchers from the University of Toronto and McGill University were also recognized at the ceremony for their studies on unethical behavior and innovative technology using mosquito proboscises for 3D printing. The Ig Nobel Awards, hosted by the Annals of Improbable Research, relocated to Europe after 35 years in the U.S. to accommodate international attendees.
Thurairajah, acknowledging the global collaboration in science, supported the decision to shift the awards ceremony to Europe. He emphasized the importance of inclusivity within the scientific community and expressed concern over potential limitations on attendees from various parts of the world.
