In a special tribute, a street in the St. James area of Winnipeg has been renamed in honor of local drummer Brent Fitz. The section of Bellavista Crescent, located between Voyageur Avenue and Rogan Drive, now bears the honorary name Brent Fitz Way. Fitz, known for his music career that has taken him around the globe and allowed him to perform with renowned artists like Slash, Alice Cooper, and Streetheart, expressed his gratitude and disbelief at the recognition.

Having grown up in the neighborhood and considering it his “superpower,” Fitz shared his humble roots during an interview with CBC’s Up to Speed host Julie Buckingham. Despite being away from Winnipeg frequently and his parents having moved from the street some years back, Fitz makes it a point to visit his childhood area whenever he returns home, finding it energizing and inspiring.

Reflecting on his upbringing, Fitz credited the lessons and experiences from his time on the street and in the city as the foundation of his achievements in music and life. The drummer learned about the street renaming proposal from Mayor Scott Gillingham following a performance with Triumph on May 5 at Canada Life Centre.

During the renaming ceremony, Gillingham praised Fitz as an inspirational figure for youth, emphasizing his journey from a young dreamer in the neighborhood to a respected figure in rock music. Fitz, wearing a shirt proudly declaring “made in Winnipeg,” expressed his gratitude to his family and first piano teacher for nurturing his passion for music.

Acknowledging the impact of the city on his life and career, Fitz expressed his love for Winnipeg and the valuable lessons it has taught him. He performed with Streetheart and his band, Toque, at the Burt Block Party outdoor event at the Burton Cummings Theatre on Saturday, showcasing his musical talents to the local community.
