Royal Mail is facing potential backlash from its already disgruntled customer base due to the possibility of another increase in stamp prices looming on the horizon.
The privatized postal giant is anticipated to announce soon whether the cost of a first class stamp will once again see an uptick in early April. While no definitive decision has been reached yet, historical patterns suggest that prices tend to rise around this time each year.
In the previous year, the price of a first class stamp escalated by 5p to £1.70, marking a significant increase from 76p in 2020, representing a 124% surge. Currently, a book of eight first class stamps carries a price tag of £13.60. Although second class stamp prices are capped, they have still climbed from 65p in 2020 to 87p in the prior April.
Allegations from Royal Mail whistleblowers have surfaced, indicating that mail deliveries are frequently being missed, with parcels taking precedence over letters due to operational strains. Multiple postal workers from various regions in the UK disclosed these issues to the BBC, with the majority reporting delays in their offices. Many expressed concerns about parcels being prioritized over letters, a claim that Royal Mail has previously refuted.
Addressing the situation, a postman shared, “There are delivery offices that manage to clear all the post daily, but they are rare, and unfortunately, mine is not one of them.” In response, a Royal Mail spokesperson stated, “We understand the frustration caused when post does not arrive on time and are working diligently to rectify any delays, especially considering adverse weather conditions and higher-than-usual sick absences that have impacted certain routes.”
Anticipated quarterly reports from Royal Mail expected before the end of February are likely to reveal further missed delivery targets. This follows the imposition of a £21 million fine on the company in the previous October for failing to meet first and second class delivery benchmarks in the preceding financial year, marking one of the largest fines levied by regulator Ofcom against any company.
During the 2024-25 financial year, Royal Mail achieved on-time delivery rates of only 77% for first class mail and 92.5% for second class mail, significantly below the respective targets of 93% and 98.5%. This marked the third consecutive year in which Royal Mail, now under the ownership of Czech billionaire Daniel Kretinsky, was penalized for not meeting service standards.
Royal Mail has been authorized to reduce the frequency of second class letter deliveries to five days every two weeks. This change, implemented since last July, involves shifting to alternate weekdays, with three delivery days one week and two the next, in response to declining letter volumes as part of modifications to the Universal Service Obligation.
Despite these adjustments, Royal Mail has yet to finalize agreements with the Communication Workers Union regarding the operational changes. Craig Anderson from the CWU expressed concerns about the company’s service improvements, stating, “I have doubts about the service getting better in the future, as it hasn’t improved since Christmas… Royal Mail is facing a crisis.”
Furthermore, Royal Mail has issued warnings about possible service disruptions across more than 100 UK postcodes due to inclement weather and increased absenteeism among workers.
