“Wife’s Prompt Saves Man: Brain Tumor Discovery at 51”

Mark Barrow, aged 51, revealed that he had not seen a doctor since he was 16 until a brain tumor was discovered due to an incident involving his glasses. His wife prompted him to get new glasses, leading to a routine eye check where concerns about his elevated blood pressure were raised. Shortly after, Mark suffered a dizzy spell while driving and was swiftly taken to the emergency department at Royal Stoke Hospital.

Subsequent MRI scans in January 2025 unveiled a glioma, a cancerous brain tumor, in Mark’s brain. This revelation came as a shock to Mark, a retail manager from Stoke on Trent, who had never taken a sick day or been to a hospital before. In addition to the tumor, it was confirmed that Mark had experienced a mini-stroke and had high blood pressure. Despite the tumor being small, doctors advised regular monitoring rather than immediate surgery.

Expressing his disbelief, Mark stated, “It didn’t register. I have always been in good health, never having seen a doctor since I was 16.” He added, “It still feels surreal even now. If it weren’t for my broken glasses, I may never have known about the tumor until it was too late.”

Mark is now scheduled for annual MRI scans, with no signs of tumor growth detected thus far. He admitted that his emotional state fluctuated post-diagnosis, with good and bad days. He acknowledged his luck in remaining symptom-free with no issues in mobility or speech, allowing life to continue normally.

Motivated to make a positive impact for others facing similar challenges, Mark plans to participate in Brain Tumour Research’s 99 Miles in November fundraiser while vacationing in Cyprus. This initiative aims to raise funds and awareness for crucial research by engaging participants in activities like walking, running, cycling, or swimming throughout the month.

Highlighting the severity of brain tumors, which claim more lives of individuals under 40 than any other cancer and more men under 75 than prostate cancer, Brain Tumour Research emphasized the lack of funding dedicated to brain tumor research. Only one percent of cancer research funding since 2002 has been allocated to brain tumors.

Community development manager Letty Greenfield expressed appreciation for Mark’s willingness to share his story and participate in the fundraising challenge, underscoring the unpredictable and devastating nature of brain tumors. She commended Mark’s determination to transform his diagnosis into a positive endeavor, calling it truly inspiring.

To support Mark’s fundraising efforts, donations can be made through his JustGiving page.
