Customers were deeply saddened by the announcement of the permanent closure of a family-owned art and stationery store.
Clarkes of Sussex shared the closure news via social media, stating that the time had come to shutter their Burgess Hill establishment in West Sussex after over four decades of operation.
Although an exact closing date has not been specified, the store is set to cease operations in April, prompting emotional responses from its loyal clientele.
Expressing their dismay, one patron mentioned, “Your shop will be greatly missed. Visiting has always been a delightful experience.” Another comment read, “This news is truly disheartening.”
Further testimonials included sentiments such as, “I have been a customer for many years, and your team has consistently been supportive, respectful, and kind,” and “It’s saddening to hear this news – your store and staff are truly wonderful.”
Last year, Clarkes of Sussex closed its Brighton branch after trading for 25 years, while maintaining other stores in various Sussex locations, including Haywards Heath.
In a separate development, Clarkes in Lewes, under different ownership, is also set to close its doors in March.
Jay Patel, the proprietor of Clarkes of Sussex, penned a poignant message on social media explaining the decision to close the Burgess Hill store. He expressed, “With mixed emotions, I announce the closure of Clarkes after over 40 years of serving this wonderful community, including my own 35-year journey here.”
Patel further added, “Above all, I cherish the kindness, loyalty, and countless conversations we’ve shared. Watching families grow and friendships form over the years has been an honor.”
