A husband, Hakan Aysal, has been imprisoned for pushing his pregnant wife, Semra Aysal, off a cliff in Turkey’s Mugla province. The tragic incident occurred at Butterfly Valley after the couple took photos together. Hakan’s motive was to profit from a life insurance policy he had recently obtained.
During the trial at Fethiye High Criminal Court, it was revealed that Semra, who was seven months pregnant and had a fear of heights, was lured to the cliff’s edge under the pretext of taking a selfie. Hakan then callously pushed her off the cliff when there were no witnesses around.
After the crime, Hakan attempted to claim a £40,000 insurance payout and had taken out multiple loans in Semra’s name. Suspicions arose when he swiftly sought the insurance money following his wife’s death. Bank records also showed his extravagant lifestyle post her demise.
Hakan was charged with “premeditated murder” by prosecutors in 2022. He was sentenced to serve a minimum of 30 years before being eligible for parole. Witnesses described him as calm and carefree after the incident, with one passerby mentioning Hakan did not actively participate in the search for Semra’s body.
Despite being incarcerated, Hakan sought legal action against 200 individuals who allegedly defamed him online in 2022, aiming for compensation for each. His attempt at profiting from legal disputes hints at his lack of remorse.
