“Record Numbers Achieve Type 2 Diabetes Remission with NHS ‘Soups and Shakes’ Plan”

Record numbers of individuals are undergoing a “soups and shakes” regimen prescribed by the NHS to manage their diabetes. More than 30,000 people have enrolled in the 12-month total diet replacement plan, which involves consuming soups, shakes, and bars exclusively for the initial 12 weeks before gradually reintroducing regular food.

A recent study revealed that one in three participants in the program successfully achieved remission of Type 2 diabetes, a feat once deemed unattainable. The number of individuals enrolled in the NHS Type 2 Diabetes Path to Remission Programme spiked to over 13,000 in 2024/25, nearly doubling from the previous year’s 6,401.

Dr. Clare Hambling, NHS Director for Diabetes and Obesity, expressed enthusiasm for the positive impact of the proven NHS diet regimen, noting its ability to facilitate weight loss and potentially reverse type 2 diabetes. The program offers personalized support and guidance alongside low-calorie diets to assist individuals in adopting a healthier lifestyle long-term.

In the UK, an estimated 5.6 million people have type 2 diabetes, with 1.2 million cases undiagnosed. This condition is a primary contributor to preventable vision impairment among working-age individuals and is linked to complications such as kidney failure, amputations, heart attacks, strokes, and certain cancers.

The NHS provides soups and shakes containing 800 to 900 calories per day as part of the program. For reference, the recommended daily calorie intake in the UK is 2,500 kcal for men and 2,000 kcal for women to maintain weight.

Participants receive guidance from healthcare professionals to gradually reintegrate nutritious foods into their diets to sustain weight loss, with regular monitoring of their progress.

Colette Marshall, chief executive at Diabetes UK, highlighted the organization’s research efforts that have reshaped the treatment approach for type 2 diabetes, emphasizing the potential for remission. Achieving remission can significantly improve the quality of life for individuals recently diagnosed with type 2 diabetes, reducing the risk of severe complications.

Eligibility for the NHS Type 2 Diabetes Path to Remission Programme requires a type 2 diabetes diagnosis within the last six years and a BMI exceeding 27, or 25 for individuals from specific ethnic backgrounds.
