“ChatGPT Creator Larry Summers Steps Down Amid Epstein Scandal”

Following the revelation of his correspondence with the late convicted child sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, Larry Summers, the creator of ChatGPT, has decided to step down from his position at OpenAI.

Summers’ resignation was prompted by the surfacing of emails indicating a continued amicable relationship with Epstein even after the latter’s 2008 conviction for child sex crimes. The OpenAI board acknowledged Summers’ resignation, stating, “Larry has chosen to resign from the OpenAI board of directors, a decision we respect. We value his significant contributions and unique perspective.”

The announcement coincides with Summers’ recent announcement of scaling back on public commitments. In a statement relayed by his spokesperson Kelly Friendly, Summers affirmed his departure from the OpenAI board, aligning with his earlier decision to reduce public engagements.

Expressing gratitude for his tenure and optimism about the organization’s future, Summers, who joined the OpenAI board in November 2023, played a pivotal role in stabilizing the non-profit entity and reinstating CEO Sam Altman, following the dismissal of prior board members who ousted Altman days earlier.

In a message to CBS, Summers confessed, “I deeply regret my actions and acknowledge the distress they have caused.” Prior to his involvement with OpenAI, Summers served as the treasury secretary during the administration of former Democratic President Bill Clinton and later held the position of Harvard University president from 2001 to 2006, where he continues to teach as a professor.

Epstein, a convicted sex offender who passed away by suicide several years ago, was notorious for his connections to affluent and influential individuals, fueling speculations and controversies surrounding the conduct of the American elite.

A political standoff emerged between the White House and Republican factions over the release of the Epstein Files. President Trump reversed his stance on withholding the files after facing internal dissent within his party and realizing there was adequate support to pass the bill for their disclosure.
