A young boy, Nathaniel Burton, tragically faced repeated attempts on his life by his mother, Sarah Safranek. Despite his efforts to seek help and warn his grandmothers about the danger he was in, his pleas were disregarded. Nathaniel’s fears were realized when Safranek suffocated him to death in their home. Prior to his passing, Nathaniel expressed his concerns to his grandmother, revealing the terrifying experiences he endured at the hands of his mother.
Nathaniel’s death occurred on February 18, 2021, with prosecutors determining that Safranek suffocated him the day before. Despite receiving a 35-year prison sentence for first-degree murder after confessing to the crime, Safranek denied the accusations made by Nathaniel.
The court proceedings revealed disturbing details about Safranek’s behavior, including internet searches related to harming a child and inquiries about cremation costs. Additionally, evidence from Nathaniel’s foster family and his grandmothers highlighted previous incidents of abuse and neglect towards the young boy. Despite multiple visits from child services, Nathaniel’s cries for help went unheeded, ultimately leading to his tragic demise.
Judge Anthony Peska ruled that Safranek must serve her full sentence and undergo three years of supervised release upon completion.
