The latest scheme, identified by Zimperium, exploits Android’s capability to sideload apps onto devices, a feature favored by Android due to its more open nature compared to Apple’s iOS. Users searching for apps like TikTok or Chrome may be led to rogue websites displaying seemingly legitimate software. If users are deceived, a counterfeit version of the desired application is downloaded, along with the hidden installation of Rokarolla.

These malicious apps request numerous personal permissions, such as accessing notifications, under the guise of legitimacy, making it easy for users to grant them. Once permission is given, cybercriminals can begin extracting data. Zimperium notes that Rokarolla targets a wide range of financial, cryptocurrency, and social media applications, using advanced evasion tactics to bypass traditional mobile security solutions.

To mitigate the risk of falling victim to such threats, it is strongly advised to only download apps from the official Google Play Store. While sideloading may seem convenient, downloading software in this manner always carries inherent risks.
