Woman Suffers Severe Infection After Dental Surgery

A young woman’s life took a drastic turn after she contracted a severe infection following a dental procedure. Razan Ankour, a 26-year-old resident of the Gorbals area in Glasgow, experienced excruciating pain that led her to seek urgent medical attention at Queen Elizabeth University Hospital. Subsequent examinations revealed a serious infection that necessitated emergency surgery to drain fluid causing significant swelling in her jaw and neck.

The surgical intervention resulted in a noticeable scar on her neck, likened by Razan to a “knife wound.” Seeking to minimize its visibility, she is considering reconstructive and laser treatments. Razan recounted being referred to The Albion Clinic in downtown Glasgow by her general practitioner due to intense jaw discomfort that impeded her ability to eat or close her mouth. The procedure intended to address a misaligned wisdom tooth resulted in rapid swelling of her face and neck post-surgery.

In an interview with Glasgow Live, Razan described the alarming progression of her symptoms, including complete jaw immobility and severe swelling that rendered her unrecognizable within days. Transported to the hospital via ambulance, she received the diagnosis of a severe infection, prompting surgeons to perform an incision below her jaw to insert a drainage tube.

The aftermath of the surgery proved challenging for Razan, as she grappled with eating difficulties, restricted mouth movement, and loss of smell due to potent antibiotics. Despite expectations for follow-up care and laser therapy to aid in the healing process, these services were not provided. Consequently, she continues to endure discomfort, struggles with self-esteem, and faces mental health repercussions, feeling compelled to conceal the scar from others.

NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde confirmed that an evaluation of Razan’s care at QEUH concluded she received appropriate and standard treatment. A health board spokesperson expressed regret for any distress experienced by Razan and encouraged her to communicate any concerns for further support.

Although Razan has not lodged a formal complaint against the dental facility, she has initiated a fundraiser to finance corrective procedures for the scar. The Albion Clinic has been contacted for their input on the matter.
