“Gang Member in Clown Mask Sentenced to Life”

A man who fatally stabbed a rival gang member at a liquor store before embarking on a violent spree with a shotgun while wearing a clown mask has been sentenced to prison. Lekan Akinsoji, 27, is part of the notorious North Newham gang, known for its history of violent crimes, including stabbings and murders in east London. In a previous incident in 2019, Akinsoji engaged in a shootout with armed officers.

Akinsoji has now received a life sentence with a minimum term of 28 years for the murder of 24-year-old Ahmed Deen Jah in 2017. During the trial at the Old Bailey in central London, prosecutor Anthony Orchard described the chilling scene where Akinsoji’s appearance in a clown mask reminded an officer of a Hollywood movie. Akinsoji confessed to being associated with the Woodrange gang, while Jah was a prominent figure in the Custom House gang, tragically losing his life in a brutal attack.

Both Akinsoji and an accomplice, identified as Keita, were found guilty of murdering Ahmed Deen Jah by a jury at the Old Bailey. Akinsoji was sentenced to life imprisonment with a minimum term of 28 years, while Keita received a life sentence with a minimum of 22 years. The presiding judge emphasized that regardless of Jah’s gang affiliation, no one deserves to die for it, highlighting the profound impact on Jah’s family who have endured the loss of two sons.

The court heard how the fatal encounter unfolded as Jah left a shop, only to be pursued by two masked individuals who ultimately attacked and fatally wounded him. The incident, captured on CCTV, underscored the premeditated nature of the crime, linked to ongoing gang violence between North Newham and Custom House gangs. Jah’s criminal background, including prior convictions for drug offenses and violence, was also discussed during the trial.

The defense lawyers for Akinsoji and Keita portrayed a grim picture of gang warfare and societal influences that led the defendants down a destructive path. Despite the tragic outcome, they highlighted missed opportunities for intervention and rehabilitation earlier in their lives. The involvement of Akinsoji and his associates in a violent confrontation with armed officers, resulting in their arrest and subsequent convictions, further underscored the dangerous escalation of gang-related violence in the region.

The trial revealed the chilling details of the gang’s activities, including the possession of deadly weapons such as a sawn-off shotgun and a ‘Zombie’ knife, as they drove through rival gang territories in a menacing display of power. The subsequent shootout with law enforcement officers highlighted the brazen and reckless behavior of the perpetrators. Ultimately, Akinsoji and his accomplices were convicted, shedding light on the devastating consequences of gang violence in communities and the urgent need for intervention to prevent further tragedies.
