An NHS physician is advising individuals to consider having a single drink to aid in better digestion. Dr. Karan Raj, known as @dr.karanr on TikTok, responded to a video featuring Gino D’Acampo, an Italian chef, suggesting that people should avoid beverages like cappuccinos and instead opt for an espresso.
Dr. Raj highlighted the potential benefits of having an espresso after meals for improved digestion. He explained that an espresso, being low in volume and a concentrated coffee without milk, can serve as a post-meal digestive aid. The caffeine and bitter compounds in the espresso can boost stomach acid secretion and stimulate the vagus nerve, enhancing gut motility to kick-start the digestive process.
In contrast, drinks like cappuccinos, which are larger and contain milk, may not be as beneficial for digestion. Milk, being nutrient-dense with fat, protein, and lactose, can slow down stomach emptying, leading to a feeling of fullness. Moreover, the proteins and lactose in milk require additional digestion, potentially causing post-meal heaviness and bloating, especially for those sensitive to lactose.
An espresso typically measures around 30-40ml and is often consumed for a quick energy boost. If bloating is a concern, having an espresso might be a helpful solution. Alternatively, for non-coffee drinkers seeking digestive benefits, peppermint tea is suggested as an option to relax intestinal muscles and improve gut motility.
Furthermore, research indicates that drinking espresso could potentially lower the risk of Alzheimer’s Disease. Compounds found in espresso have been shown to inhibit a key protein involved in the development of Alzheimer’s. Additionally, studies suggest that coffee consumption may contribute to longevity, with regular coffee drinkers having a lower risk of death according to various research findings.
