A new device called the Manhattan S4-R set-top box is gaining popularity at Argos for homes looking to upgrade to a Sky Q-style experience without monthly fees. Launched recently, this device offers similar features to Sky’s premium service, allowing users to record shows, pause live TV, and store content on its internal hard drive.
The main distinction is the cost structure. Unlike Sky Q, which necessitates a monthly subscription, the Manhattan S4-R offers access to over 100 channels without ongoing payments. Once purchased, there are no additional charges.
The S4-R operates with Freesat, utilizing an existing satellite dish to deliver free TV channels directly to TVs. Channels available include BBC, ITV1, Channel 4, E4, Legend, Sky Mix, TLC, U&Dave, and That’s TV 2.
According to Manhattan, the device boasts a user-friendly interface, search functionalities, and access to over 60,000 hours of on-demand content. Supported apps include BBC iPlayer, ITVX, Channel 4, and My5.
While it may not rival Sky Q in premium sports and movie packages, Freesat’s advantage lies in its free viewing experience.
The Manhattan S4-R 500GB model is now on sale at retailers like Argos and Amazon for £219.99, with larger 1TB and 2TB versions expected soon. Demand seems high, as indicated by Argos listing the product as “in demand” and “selling fast.”
Alex Arbab-Zadeh, Manhattan’s COO, highlighted the company’s goal to provide a subscription-free experience for Freesat users, enhancing recording capabilities with up to four simultaneous recordings compared to the previous two-channel limit. He positioned the S4-R as an attractive alternative for households seeking an affordable, flexible TV option.
In a similar vein, the Pleio puck has entered the market, offering free streaming access to TVs without an aerial. This device delivers over 50 live channels via the internet instead of traditional broadcast methods.
After initial stock shortages, the Pleio puck is back in stock through retailers like Amazon and eBay, priced at £99.99, including a gaming controller and access to over 200 online games.
Sky has announced a 20 percent price reduction ahead of the upcoming World Cup, with prices starting from £4.50 per month for the Sky Glass Air TV. The upgraded Sky Glass Gen 2 model, featuring a 4K Quantum Dot display and built-in Dolby Atmos soundbar, starts at £11 per month.
