“Experts Warn Asthma Patients: Mask Up for Bonfire Night”

Millions of individuals are advised to wear face masks today due to an expected increase in severe symptoms of a common health condition. Health experts recommend using some form of face covering or a scarf to reduce the risk.

In the UK, a significant number of people, estimated at 7.2 million, are living with asthma, accounting for about eight out of every 100 individuals. Additionally, over eight million individuals have been diagnosed with asthma at some point in their lives, although it is possible to outgrow the condition.

As Bonfire Night approaches, medical professionals are cautioning asthma patients and parents of asthmatic children about the potential hazards of fireworks and bonfires during the UK-wide festivities. Numerous public and private bonfires and firework displays are scheduled for this week, posing challenges for those with respiratory problems due to a combination of cold air and increased smoke.

Dr. Zoe Lees, a medical writer at online pharmacy MedExpress with a PhD in Metabolic Medicine, highlights the impact of bonfire night on individuals with asthma. She emphasizes the importance of regular asthma medication intake, particularly during such events, and stresses the need to carry a reliever inhaler at all times.

Dr. Lees advises individuals to stand away from smoke if acute symptoms develop and to be vigilant for early signs of an asthma attack, such as wheezing, breathlessness, or tightness in the chest. Using reliever medication as prescribed can help control symptoms and prevent severe attacks, with a prompt call to emergency services advised if symptoms worsen significantly.

For parents concerned about their children’s asthma risk, Dr. Lees explains that asthma is typically not diagnosed before age five. However, indicators such as a family history of allergies or recurrent respiratory symptoms may suggest a potential risk, necessitating a medical evaluation if symptoms persist or worsen.

If asthma symptoms are persistent, worsening, or impacting daily activities, seeking medical advice is recommended. In case of a severe asthma attack, maintaining a calm posture while seeking immediate medical assistance is crucial.
