A Metropolitan Police officer featured in a BBC Panorama program has been dismissed for embracing the use of force. Pc Jason Sinclair-Birt from Charing Cross police station was fired after admitting to discussing using force on a detainee. Although he did not actually use excessive force, he was found to have shared a false account for entertainment purposes.

Commander Jason Prins determined that the officer’s actions constituted gross misconduct and warranted immediate dismissal. Three other officers from the same station faced similar fates following findings of gross misconduct in the BBC Panorama program. Pc Philip Neilson, Pc Martin Borg, and Sergeant Joe McIlvenny were all dismissed without notice.

During the hearing, it was revealed that Pc Sinclair-Birt had boasted about using force on a detainee and seemed to take pleasure in the description of the incident. Despite claiming it was for comedic effect, Pc Sinclair-Birt’s comments were taken seriously by the authorities.

Although video footage of the encounter showed the detainee assaulting Pc Sinclair-Birt, the officer maintained that he used lawful force and did not resort to extreme measures. His remarks were characterized as dark humor among colleagues but were seen as glorifying the use of force.

In his defense, Pc Sinclair-Birt clarified that his words were not meant to be taken literally, but the authorities found his behavior unacceptable. The incident serves as a reminder of the importance of upholding professional conduct in law enforcement.
