Elderly woman found dead on island after cruise mishap

An elderly woman, identified as Suzanne Rees, was discovered deceased on a secluded island after being inadvertently left behind by a cruise ship. The 80-year-old solo traveler went missing during an organized hike on Lizard Island in Queensland, Australia. The cruise ship departed for its next destination, only realizing she was missing when she did not show up for dinner, approximately five hours later.

Family members of Ms. Rees have criticized Coral Expeditions, operated by the National Roads and Motorists’ Association (NRMA) in Australia, for what they described as a lack of proper care and judgment. The incident occurred during the initial stop of the Coral Adventurer’s 60-day journey around Australia, a luxurious holiday costing £40,000 per person. An investigation is underway to determine why Ms. Rees was left behind, with concerns raised about the alleged absence of a passenger headcount before departure.

Ms. Rees’s body was found near the hiking trail leading to Cook’s Look, the highest summit on Lizard Island. The Coral Adventurer had set sail from Cairns on Friday and had anchored at Lizard Island on Saturday, allowing passengers to explore the island’s attractions. Following the discovery of Ms. Rees’s disappearance, search efforts were launched, including aerial searches conducted by a helicopter.

Mark Fifield, the CEO of Coral Expeditions, confirmed the tragic news, expressing deep regret over the incident. He assured that the company is cooperating with authorities in the ongoing investigation and providing support to the bereaved family. Queensland Police stated that the woman’s death is being treated as sudden and non-suspicious, with further details expected as the investigation progresses. A report for the coroner will be prepared accordingly.
