Labour MP Warns of Farage’s Opposition to Online Safety Act

A Labour Member of Parliament has cautioned that Nigel Farage’s stance against the Online Safety Act could result in pornography being easily accessible to children through their devices.

Emily Darlington, a member of the tech committee in Westminster, emphasized the importance of the bill in safeguarding children from online predators. She criticized those opposing the bill for overlooking the real-life implications of online abuse.

The MP for Milton Keynes Central also highlighted concerns about catfishing, citing it as a prevalent issue affecting young individuals in her local community.

In an exclusive interview with The Mirror, Darlington expressed her views, stating, “The Labour Government aims to restrict access to pornography, while Nigel Farage is advocating for the repeal of the online safety act, potentially allowing children unrestricted access to explicit content.”

She added, “Do we intend to permit unrestricted viewing for minors, or limit it to those above 18? Farage argues it is about freedom of speech, but in reality, it is not. This is more about advancing personal agendas, posing a grave risk to our children. We must take a stronger stance to acknowledge that while the Online Safety Act is not flawless, it plays a crucial role in safeguarding children and upholding free speech rights for everyone.”

Reform UK has voiced opposition to the new law, contending that it fails to adequately protect children and restricts free speech. Darlington, who has confronted online abuse previously, recounted distressing incidents related to catfishing.

She highlighted the widespread issue of young people being targeted online, revealing that a survey in her constituency found that a third of young individuals had been approached by strangers online.

Regarding the dangers, Darlington explained, “These individuals are often unsavory characters, ranging from predators to groomers. The majority of grooming activities occur online, causing significant harm to vulnerable youths. This aspect of the debate on online harms is frequently overlooked; it extends beyond the digital realm and impacts the real lives of many young individuals.” Reform UK did not respond to requests for comment.
