An elderly woman tragically lost her life on a secluded island after being inadvertently left behind by a cruise ship during her vacation. Suzanne Rees, aged 80, was only reported missing when she failed to show up for dinner, five hours after disappearing on Lizard Island in the Great Barrier Reef, Queensland, Australia.
During an organized hike on the island, Ms. Rees fell ill and was left behind as the cruise ship, Coral Adventurer, continued its journey. The incident occurred at the beginning of the cruise, which costs a substantial £40,000 per person. Coral Expeditions, operated by National Roads and Motorists’ Association (NRMA) in Australia, faced criticism from Ms. Rees’s family for what they described as a lack of care and common sense.
An investigation involving multiple agencies will examine the circumstances surrounding the abandonment of the Australian tourist, who was known for her passion for bushwalking and gardening. Questions remain unanswered about the delay in noticing her absence and the events leading to her death.
Katherine Rees, the daughter of the deceased, revealed that her mother had fallen ill during a hike on Lizard Island but specific details about her condition are still undisclosed. Ms. Rees’s body was discovered 50 meters off the hiking trail to Cook’s Look, the highest point on Lizard Island, just days after the cruise departed from Cairns.
Lizard Island, a favored spot for divers, snorkelers, and hikers, is renowned for its seclusion and natural beauty. Cook’s Look, named after Captain James Cook, offers a challenging but rewarding hiking experience spanning four kilometers.
Following her illness, Suzanne Rees was allegedly instructed to descend the mountain unaccompanied before the ship departed without conducting a passenger count. Witnesses on a nearby yacht reported hearing emergency radio transmissions from the cruise ship but noted that passenger counts were only done for snorkelers, not for all guests on the island.
Coral Expeditions CEO, Mark Fifield, expressed condolences to the Rees family and emphasized their cooperation with official investigations into the tragic incident. The company refrained from further comments pending the ongoing investigations and pledged continued support to the family during this difficult period.
