“Trump Considers Naval Action Against Venezuelan Cartels”

The potential destruction of key cartel sites in Venezuela looms as President Donald Trump considers deploying the US Navy to take action, according to a retired colonel interviewed by The Mirror. The recent presence of the USS Gerald R. Ford, the world’s largest aircraft carrier, suggests a possible escalation in Trump’s efforts against suspected drug trafficking activities near Venezuela’s coast, which have led to numerous deaths since August. Trump’s administration aims to combat the drug trade, particularly the flow of fentanyl that has claimed thousands of lives annually in the US.

As the naval strike group arrived in the Caribbean, Trump made statements indicating a readiness to confront Venezuelan dictator Nicolás Maduro’s regime, alleging its association with cartels facilitating the smuggling of opioids into the US. Retired US Marine Corps Colonel and senior advisor Mark Cancian highlighted the possibility of direct strikes against both the cartels and Maduro’s government.

The mounting US military presence in the region, including the deployment of warships and submarines, reflects long-standing opposition in Washington DC to Maduro’s regime. Concerns over the regime’s support for cartels and drug trafficking activities have influenced Trump’s decision to reinforce naval assets in the Caribbean. However, experts like Mr. Cancian caution that a ground offensive against Venezuela’s substantial military forces is currently unfeasible for the US.

While the US hopes to see a change in leadership in Venezuela, there are concerns that cartels could maintain control in less populated areas even if Maduro is ousted. The potential for a new government would likely prompt the US to offer military aid and assistance from other countries to stabilize the situation. Trump may advocate for supporting a new administration in Venezuela to combat drug trafficking and protect American citizens.

Amidst discussions of potential military aid to Venezuela, comparisons are drawn to the situation in Ukraine, with expectations that support for the South American nation would be on a smaller scale. Any intervention in Venezuela would likely be framed as a strategic move to combat drug-related threats and safeguard US interests, despite domestic calls for reduced involvement in foreign conflicts.
