A distressed mother sensed a strong odor resembling nail varnish remover before her residence exploded, prompting her son to leap from a window to save himself. Cheryl Whitter, 44, witnessed her life shatter as an e-bike detonated in her living room, triggering a fire that rapidly spread through the property. The incident occurred at a residence on Lewis Road in Mitcham around 8:10 am last Friday, leaving behind a scene of destruction.
Cheryl and her four children, Kyron (22), Che (20), Lexi (16), and Karim (10), are currently accommodated at a Premier Inn in Colliers Wood following the devastation of their 12-year home. Cheryl, too traumatized to speak, had her sister relay the account to MyLondon.
The fire, ignited by a faulty lithium-ion battery from the e-bike, emitted the distinctive nail varnish-like smell noticed by Cheryl. The acrid scent permeated the entire house before the bike erupted like fireworks. Cheryl’s swift actions led to the safe evacuation of her youngest child, Karim, before discovering that Che was still inside, necessitating his daring escape through a window.
Debbie Whitter, Cheryl’s full-time carer, recounted her panic upon hearing the news and the emotional toll it took on her. Cheryl’s distress is palpable, especially as she marked her birthday post-tragedy, yearning for a new home amidst the anguish.
Debbie emphasized the overwhelming support received from the local community, providing essential items to aid the family during this challenging period. AFC Wimbledon also pitched in, donating beds and mattresses to assist Cheryl’s family.
Despite the harrowing experience, Debbie remains grateful that Cheryl and her children survived the ordeal. A fundraiser has been initiated to aid Cheryl and her family during this difficult time.
