A firm in the construction industry has gone into administration, jeopardizing over 400 job positions. Caldwell Construction Limited, established in 2007, has enlisted administrators from PKF Littlejohn Advisory. The company specializes in groundworks and civil engineering, with offices located in Stoke-on-Trent and Warrington, Cheshire.
Paul Smith, a Partner at PKF Littlejohn Advisory UK LLP, highlighted the tough economic environment in the construction sector, citing rising costs, project delays, and market uncertainty as significant challenges. Despite a turnover of £58.4 million last year, the company struggled with an operating profit of less than £1 million. Smith noted that recent financial pressures intensified at Caldwell, straining cash flow and operations.
Efforts by the PKF Littlejohn Advisory team in Manchester and Leeds to explore solutions for Caldwell were unsuccessful, leading to the company’s decision to enter administration. Joint Administrator Oliver Collinge stated that the immediate focus is on assisting employees and stakeholders while evaluating the business’s assets.
In a separate incident, Consumer Energy Solutions, a company in south Wales, also faced administration, impacting nearly 300 employees. The energy provider, with sites in Swansea and Rhondda Cynon Taf, abruptly ceased trading, leaving staff members shocked. The closure resulted from the end of the UK Government’s Energy Company Obligation 4 scheme, which the company operated to aid homeowners in energy-saving upgrades like insulation and solar panels.
