Beware: Xanax Use for Anxiety May Mask Root Causes

If you are facing issues with anxiety or sleep disturbances, your doctor may recommend lorazepam or alprazolam, commonly known as Xanax. These medications, classified as benzodiazepines, function by targeting gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA), a chemical that induces calming effects in the body.

Although both drugs are utilized to address anxiety, alprazolam can also be prescribed to manage seizures linked to epilepsy. While they can effectively alleviate anxiety symptoms and other conditions, a clinical psychologist has cautioned against relying solely on these medications.

Fernando Azor, a psychologist active on social media platforms, advised his followers on TikTok that benzodiazepines can help alleviate anxiety symptoms but do not address the root causes. He emphasized that the physical symptoms associated with anxiety are not necessarily negative or urgent for clinical intervention.

In a recent video message, Fernando stated, “When using Lorazepam or Alprazolam to deal with an anxiety attack, it’s essential to understand the underlying issues causing the crisis and heightened alertness and worry, while also considering the drug’s assistance. These drugs, Alprazolam and Lorazepam, are well-known for significantly reducing alertness levels, worry, and distress.”

He further explained that individuals experiencing anxiety crises may struggle to cope with the physical symptoms induced by anxiety. These symptoms, such as rapid heartbeat or nervousness, are often perceived as highly negative and avoidable.

Fernando recommended developing coping mechanisms to address the root causes of anxiety, particularly during an anxiety attack. The NHS also suggests a combination of talking therapies like cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) and medication for treating generalized anxiety disorder (GAD).

Regarding anxiety crises, Fernando highlighted the tendency to rely on quick-acting drugs like Alprazolam, which may temporarily alleviate symptoms but do not address coping strategies. Through psychotherapy, individuals can learn skills to manage anxiety symptoms without immediate reliance on medications like Alprazolam.

If you are experiencing untreated anxiety symptoms such as sleep disturbances or persistent anxiety for over six months, seeking advice from your GP is recommended. The NHS provides additional information on treatments for generalized anxiety disorder, including various therapeutic options.
