A Conservative member made a humorous mistake by attempting to ask an additional question during Prime Minister’s Questions (PMQs) after exhausting his allotted queries, causing amusement among fellow MPs.

The confusion arose when James Cartlidge sought Speaker Sir Lindsay Hoyle’s attention for an extra question after exceeding his designated six questions. Acting on behalf of Kemi Badenoch, the Conservative Shadow Justice Secretary, Cartlidge was playfully teased by Deputy Prime Minister David Lammy during the incident.

Lammy, in his inaugural appearance at PMQs, humorously remarked on Cartlidge’s counting abilities, likening him to another MP known for similar gaffes. The Speaker intervened to clarify that Cartlidge had indeed asked his permitted number of questions.

Following the session, it was highlighted that Cartlidge had been mistaken in his attempt for an extra question.

The exchange intensified as Lammy urged his Conservative counterpart to “get a grip,” emphasizing Cartlidge’s role as Justice Secretary responsible for the justice system. The discussion centered on the accidental release of asylum seeker Hadush Kebatu from HMP Chelmsford, prompting a brief manhunt and subsequent deportation.

Cartlidge pressed Lammy on ensuring no further erroneous releases had occurred since Kebatu’s incident, to which Lammy responded by acknowledging the responsibilities of his position and addressing the concerns raised.

In response to calls for an apology, Lammy expressed regret for any distress caused, highlighting the need to address systemic issues within the justice system for which collective action was necessary.
