A man, Mal Nash, aged 42, found himself paralyzed from the chest down following persistent back pain. Nash had been enduring back discomfort for six months before seeking medical help due to escalating pain levels.
Initially diagnosed with nerve pain and prescribed painkillers during his first doctor’s visit, Nash’s condition worsened, leading to mobility issues. After two subsequent visits to the emergency room, an MRI scan revealed Nash had metastatic seminoma, a type of testicular cancer that had spread to his spine between the T6 and T7 vertebrae, causing his gradual paralysis.
His twin brother, Kevin, a 42-year-old window cleaner from Newton Abbot, Devon, recounted Nash’s ordeal, describing the excruciating pain Nash experienced that radiated from his back to his chest and shoulder. Nash, an aspiring business owner, attributed his back pain to years of factory work before seeking medical attention in April 2025.
Despite being sent home with painkillers initially, Nash’s condition deteriorated rapidly, prompting a return to the hospital where a spinal cord compression was discovered. Subsequent MRI scans in September confirmed the cancer diagnosis as the root cause of Nash’s paralysis.
In a bid to restore mobility below his chest, Nash underwent emergency spinal surgery, but unfortunately, the procedure was unsuccessful. He is now undergoing rounds of chemotherapy in hopes of treating the cancer.
To support Nash, Kevin has launched a GoFundMe campaign to raise funds for necessary home accessibility modifications. With approximately 2,400 new cases of testicular cancer diagnosed annually in UK men, Kevin stresses the importance of regular self-checks to detect early signs of the disease and prevent similar outcomes.
As Nash navigates his new reality of limited mobility, Kevin remains dedicated to adapting their living space to accommodate Nash’s needs, emphasizing the importance of taking each day as it comes.
