A strategy to heat your home without relying on the central heating system has been shared by a British Gas energy expert. Jessica Rawstron, a smart energy engineer, suggests keeping the oven door open after cooking to utilize the residual heat escaping from the appliance. By allowing the heat to slowly transfer into the kitchen, you can effectively warm up your living space while enjoying your meal. British Gas also recommends winter preparation tips such as draught-proofing around windows and doors to maintain a cozy home environment.
In addition to this technique, it is advisable to regularly bleed your radiators and ensure your boiler receives its annual service to optimize heating efficiency. As temperatures drop and yellow warnings for snow and ice are issued across various regions in the UK, households are expected to rely more on heating, especially as energy bills continue to rise. The standard annual cost for gas and electricity for households on direct debit payment plans has now reached £1,758 due to the price cap regulations. The price cap, which controls unit rates and standing charges, does not impose a total cap on energy expenses, making actual bills dependent on usage. For individuals not on fixed energy tariffs, they will fall under the price cap guidelines.
The price cap has been adjusted to £1,711 annually for pre-payment meter users and £1,894 for those paying upon receipt of bill, with revisions occurring every three months. The next price cap revision is scheduled for April 2026.
