“Chinese fraudster’s £5.5B Bitcoin scam evades UK authorities”

A Chinese fraudster implicated in a Bitcoin scam exceeding £5.5 billion managed to evade British authorities for years by traveling across Europe and staying in luxury hotels. Zhimin Qian, also known as Yadi Zhang, orchestrated a Ponzi scheme defrauding over 128,000 victims in China from 2014 to 2017, storing the illicitly acquired funds in Bitcoin assets. Fleeing to the UK in 2017, Qian recruited accomplices to establish a new life, engaging in extravagant travels and lavish expenditures across Europe.

Following her arrest in April last year, Qian, along with her associate Seng Hok Ling, admitted to money laundering charges related to the massive fraudulent Bitcoin operation. Prosecutors revealed that Qian founded the fraudulent business Lantian Gerui in 2014, attracting investments from thousands who subsequently suffered significant financial losses. After eluding Chinese authorities, Qian fled to the UK, where she orchestrated a sophisticated operation involving extensive travel, luxury purchases, and cryptocurrency transactions.

Qian’s elaborate scheme caught the attention of British authorities in 2018, leading to her eventual arrest and the seizure of millions in Bitcoin assets. The ongoing sentencing hearing at Southwark Crown Court is set to determine the fate of Qian and Ling for their roles in the multibillion-pound Bitcoin scam. Despite attempts to conceal her identity and wealth, Qian’s elaborate web of deceit and criminal activities eventually unraveled, culminating in her apprehension and the exposure of her intricate financial schemes.
