Nigel Farage is currently under scrutiny in Parliament due to a delayed declaration of interests. The Parliamentary Commissioner for Standards initiated an investigation on October 30 regarding Farage’s earnings and overseas visits. The focus of the inquiry is believed to be his failure to disclose a trip to Florida where he headlined a fundraising event for Donald Trump earlier this year.
Farage, who recently announced plans to reduce benefits, was the keynote speaker at a Republican party dinner in Tallahassee, where attendees could pay $500 per ticket or opt for a VIP package costing £18,445, which included a photo opportunity with the Clacton MP. Farage attributed the oversight of not registering the trip in parliamentary logs to an administrative error within his office.
According to parliamentary regulations, MPs must register any international trips exceeding £300 in cost, not fully funded by themselves or public money, within 28 days. In response to the investigation, a Labour source criticized Farage for his absence from Parliament and accused him of promoting austerity measures while favoring wealthy individuals over young workers.
Lib Dem Deputy Leader Daisy Cooper called for transparency regarding Farage’s ties to Trump’s administration, referencing the incident where Farage allegedly failed to disclose earnings from the dinner. Notably, a previous investigation into Farage’s ownership of an undeclared fishing boat was dismissed by the Parliamentary Commissioner for Standards, clarifying that the boat was owned by a company linked to the Reform UK MP.
Recent reports revealed Farage as the highest-earning MP in Parliament, with income generated from various outside ventures. Since the Brexit referendum, Farage has amassed a property portfolio worth £3 million and is reportedly earning approximately £100,000 monthly. His latest external role involves working as a commentator for Rupert Murdoch’s media company, New Corp, earning a substantial sum in a short period.
Requests for comments from Reform UK regarding the investigation remain unanswered.
