BT has announced a crucial update regarding landline services, urging households utilizing this technology to pay attention. The traditional copper cables that have facilitated communications for over a century are being phased out, with less than a year remaining until the transition is complete on January 31, 2027.
This shift requires millions of users to adopt new digital services that utilize internet connections for making calls to loved ones. Despite the magnitude of the change, companies like BT emphasize the necessity of this upgrade, citing the outdated copper system’s unreliability and failure to meet modern connectivity standards.
BT’s latest system, Digital Voice, offers enhanced stability, clearer audio quality, call forwarding to mobile devices, and improved call screening to combat scams and unwanted solicitations. While over three million homes in the UK have already made the switch to Digital Voice, many more households still need to transition.
In a message to Mirror Online, BT emphasized the importance of acting promptly to avoid disruptions to phone and broadband services as the deadline approaches. It is crucial for users to ensure their landline and home phone are prepared for the change as copper wires make way for digital technology.
Switching to digital services is straightforward for most BT customers, with many existing handsets being compatible with digital landlines. The transition typically allows users to retain their current phone number without any increase in billing. In cases where a simple plug-in may not suffice, contacting the provider or arranging for an engineer visit may be necessary.
BT also advises customers with special requirements, such as those using telecare devices or pendant alarms, to inform their provider promptly for tailored support. Individuals uncertain about their transition status are encouraged to verify and prepare their homes before the copper network is decommissioned.
