“David Lammy Urges MPs: Safeguard Hillsborough Bill Integrity”

Members of Parliament have been cautioned by David Lammy not to dilute the Hillsborough Bill and to expedite its enactment. The Deputy Prime Minister emphasized the importance of maintaining the legislation’s current robust form to prevent injustices from being concealed. Scheduled for its initial debate and vote in the Commons on Monday, the historic law aims to prevent future state cover-ups.

Originating from the tireless advocacy of families affected by the tragic deaths of 97 Liverpool football fans in the 1989 FA Cup semi-final crush, the landmark Bill represents a significant step towards accountability. Mr. Lammy, also the Justice Secretary, lauded the resilience of those impacted by various tragedies like Hillsborough, Grenfell, and infected blood scandals, underscoring the need for this legislation in their honor.

Introduced as the Public Office (Accountability) Bill, known as the Hillsborough law, in September, the legislation received assurances from Keir Starmer that it would not be weakened. Mr. Lammy stressed the importance of maintaining the Bill’s integrity and swift passage into law to bring about essential changes.

The proposed law will establish a duty of candor for all public officials, including police officers, with penalties for dishonesty or information concealment. It aims to address past grievances where victims felt abandoned by a system that shielded those responsible. Families affected by the Hillsborough tragedy have long fought for justice, culminating in the quashing of initial inquest results in 2016 and the acknowledgment of unlawful killings.

Support for a duty of candor extends beyond the Hillsborough incident to encompass other tragedies like the Grenfell Tower fire and the Post Office Horizon IT scandal. The Bill’s progression through parliamentary stages, starting with today’s Commons reading, signals a potential timeline for Royal Assent by spring 2026, offering hope for improved access to justice.

Mr. Lammy emphasized the significance of this legislation in empowering families against state injustices and providing them the dignity they deserve. The gravity of past failures, exemplified by the Hillsborough and Grenfell tragedies, underscores the necessity for legislative changes. As MPs deliberate on the Hillsborough Law for the first time, the focus remains on fulfilling promises of truth, accountability, and respect for grieving families.
