A woman who fled Dublin to escape child abuse ended up living with infamous serial killer Fred West, recalling his unpleasant odor vividly. Kathleen Richards, now 65, survived her time at the notorious house of horrors on 25 Cromwell Street, where she lived with Fred and his wife Rose, experiencing deeply disturbing situations as a teenager.
After enduring abuse in Ireland, Kathleen and her sister Deirdre moved to Gloucester in 1977. However, they became tenants in the Wests’ home. Initially, Kathleen found things tolerable, but Fred’s inappropriate advances soon made her uncomfortable.
Having suffered abuse before, Kathleen spent 15 distressing months in the rented room, feeling ashamed and blaming herself for Fred’s behavior. Eventually, she realized she needed to escape, as shared on The Late Late Show.
During an episode recounted on the show, Kathleen described waking up to Fred in her bed, his repugnant smell alarming her. She managed to create an excuse to leave, fleeing the house.
Initially sharing a room with Shirley Robinson, who Fred claimed was his “lover,” Kathleen later discovered Shirley had disappeared, with Fred and Rose concocting a false story about her whereabouts. Kathleen realized she was being groomed to replace Shirley, who had been murdered.
Reflecting on her escape from the house of horrors, where Fred and Rose committed heinous acts, Kathleen expressed guilt for not helping the victims sooner. Fred faced 12 murder charges but took his own life before trial, while Rose was found guilty of 10 murders.
Kathleen bravely testified against Rose in court, finding solace in her conviction. She has released a book detailing her ordeal and encourages others to speak out against abuse, emphasizing that there is no shame in seeking help.
